The Studio is Everywhere: Exhibit A

Day two of the Summer Portal and the whimsy of this experiment felt hard to find.

Funny how that can happen. It can be so easy for the vision, all magical and hopeful in the beginning, to turn into a kind of trap when the mind gets caught focusing on the less than perfect surface details (not enough time alone, emotional wobbles, body aches, etc.), forgetting the deeper intention (to stay in relationship with myself as a creative witnessing practice, to return, to see everything as part of the practice).

And yet, today between the discomfort of all the layers that arose and continue to arise, I found a moment to work on my weaving while waiting for my eldest at the park with my youngest.

The studio is everywhere if you let it be. And each moment offers the opportunity to lean into the witnessing practice. An invitation to let go of all the things that aren’t as you’d like them to be, creating a little space to be with what is, even if just for a moment.

This was today. And it was enough.

This sparked the idea for a series called “The Studio is Everywhere.” I plan to document all the different places and situations that shape shift into “The Studio” throughout this Summer Portal experiment.

As an artist that also does many other things and holds many other responsibilities beyond my creative practice, I think it is an imperative and essential part of the practice to learn to let the practice itself morph and shift in order to hold us throughout the many different situations we inevitably find ourselves navigating throughout our days, weeks, months, and years.

I don’t know about you, but I know all too well what happens to my creative practice when I wait for the perfect space, the right lighting, enough time, total peace and quiet, and the right kind of inspiration: Nothing.

Here’s to finding a way to make the work as if our lives depend on it, even if that means squatting on the edge of a concrete curb at the playground while adding four rows to a weaving.

More to come!

Weaving a portal, slow and steady, thread by thread, nearly done.
